Project of the Year (Mainline/Light Rail/Metro)
Metro Tunnel Project
Melbourne’s Metro Tunnel introduces twin 9-kilometre tunnels, five new stations and Australia’s first mixed-mode Communications-Based Train Controls deployment within an operational corridor. The Mixed-mode High-Capacity Signalling system enables CBTC and non-CBTC trains to operate safely on shared infrastructure. Delivered through close alliance collaboration, the Metro Tunnel unlocks substantial network capacity and operational flexibility while maintaining multi-operator functionality. It establishes a benchmark for large-scale urban rail transformation in Australia. It is the biggest transformation of Melbourne’s rail network in 40 years. Rail Network Alliance, one of Metro Tunnel Project's delivery partners, was responsible for the rail systems design, installation and integration and commissioning.
